Interviewing Students
You may have met many of our students informally at receptions that you have hosted, at conferences and competitions, or during site visits organized through Queen's School of Business. Now it is time to meet them in the more formal context of the interview process.
Because we are committed to making your recruitment as easy as possible, we offer several options for first-round interviewing:
- On-campus Interview Rooms (free of charge for companies interviewing our students)
There are 15 comfortable interview rooms at Queen’s Career Services, Gordon Hall, 74 Union Street. To reserve your space, e-mail Carol-Anne Bell at cab4@post.queensu.ca, or phone (613) 533-6000, ext. 74043. - Limited space is available for interviews in Goodes Hall, Queen's School of Business.
We can accommodate interviews at Goodes Hall if you are only interviewing Queen's School of Business students and have a limited interview schedule. If you require more than 2 interview rooms, we may have to book space with Queen's Career Services. To arrange interviews at Goodes Hall, please contact any one of our staff. - Off-campus Interview Rooms (charges apply – contact these establishments directly)
Some organizations elect to hold interviews at local inns or hotels within walking distance of Queen's campus. The most frequently used sites include the Donald Gordon Conference Centre, the Hochelaga Inn, and the Four Points Sheraton.
Whether you select interview rooms on or off-campus, we will ensure that the students you wish to interview are organized according to your preferred schedule, provided we receive your interview list at least one week prior to the date of your interviews. Please include student numbers, where possible, and your schedule format with your interview list. We will send you the completed schedule as soon as we have contacted the students.
Should you not be able to provide us with a list one week in advance, it is your obligation to contact the students directly and set up interview times. IMPORTANT NOTE: Students often have multiple commitments, including assignments, out of town travel for competitions, exams, and other interviews. If your notice period is too short to set up interviews, you may find some students unable to make arrangements to attend. Please try to give as much notice as possible.
Blackout Dates: Please note that during the Fall semester there are interviewing “Blackout Dates” which occur during the mid term exam period. These dates are set aside to prevent a scheduling conflict for students during their busy exam times.
Interviewing Best Practices: We strongly recommend that you contact applicants directly to let them know whether or not you will be interviewing them. This individual recognition is yet another opportunity to demonstrate that your organization values individuals and pays attention to their career aspirations.
Long-Distance Interviews: Impossible to travel to Queen's for interviews? No need to worry! You can access the leading-edge videoconferencing technology that is used by our renowned Executive MBA Program. The only direct cost to you for this service is the line charge - there is no cost to the students.
Pre-Screening Telephone Interviews: We recognize that valuable interview time is best reserved for students who meet your requirements, and suggest short telephone pre-screening interviews with students before finalizing your on-campus interviews. This may be a good way to narrow your interview list and ensure you have adequate time with finalists when you come to campus.
