Bank of Nova Scotia donates $1 million to Queen’s University
September 26, 2006
The major gift will provide support for the creation of the first-ever bursary dedicated to students with disabilities as well as help expand the Queen’s School of Business International Exchange Scholarship and Bursary program.
“Scotiabank is very proud of our partnership with Queen’s University and pleased not only to increase educational opportunities, but also to help transform today’s youth into tomorrow’s leaders,” said Ms. Graham Parker. “Our leadership in community involvement – through our charitable donations and the active volunteerism of our employees – showcases our dedication to being a socially responsible corporation in Canada and around the world.”
The establishment of the Scotiabank Accessibility Bursary will enable students with disabilities to participate more freely in academic and social life at Queen’s. On average 500 students per year, approximately three per cent of the students at Queen’s University are registered with Disability Services.
Scotiabank International Exchange Scholarships and Bursaries were first established in 2001, and over the past five years have enabled more than 100 exchanges annually and the development of new exchange partnerships in 10 countries. The new gift will allow the School of Business to expand its international exchange program, including the creation of new exchange programs in Latin America and the expansion of the existing exchange with Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico.
“At Scotiabank, we have a strong tradition of community involvement – it’s an important part of the way we live, work and do business,” added Ms. Graham Parker. “It’s important to us as an organization because – not only is it the right thing to do – it also means a lot to our customers, employees and our many stakeholders.”
For the first time, scholarships will also be open to students from Latin America to attend Queen’s School of Business for a semester — enhancing the educational opportunities for students in Latin American, a region where Scotiabank has long been a leading financial institution.
“Queen’s School of Business is proud of its continued relationship with the Bank of Nova Scotia,” said David Saunders, Dean. “We are thankful for the many programs their generous gifts help sustain.”
