August 28, 2006

Six outstanding students from Atlantic Canada have been awarded the D&R Sobey Atlantic Scholarship in recognition of their academic excellence, leadership skills and community involvement.

Valued at $56,000 per student over four years, the scholarship was established by Donald and Rob Sobey, both Queen's graduates, for students from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador applying to their first-year of the Commerce program at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.

“We are committed to supporting higher education for Atlantic Canadians,” said Rob Sobey, President and CEO, Lawtons Drugs, “It is our hope that our scholarship winners will return to Atlantic Canada after they graduate and build their business careers locally.”

The 2006 Sobey Scholarship recipients are: Camilia Elkhazin of Saint John, New Brunswick; Michael Vincent of St. George’s, Newfoundland and Labrador; and from Nova Scotia Alex Walsh of Bedford, Simon Forsyth of Greenwich, Forrest Lothian of Newport and Sheldon McCormick of Sydney.

In addition to academic excellence, this year’s recipients demonstrated strong skills in a number of areas including athletics, music, debating, student council and volunteering.

“We strive to attract the best and brightest students from all regions of Canada to our Commerce program,” said David Saunders, Dean of Queen’s School of Business. “And we are pleased to welcome the addition of six promising new leaders from Atlantic Canada.”

Recipients must maintain an academic average of 80% to renew the scholarship each year. Now in its sixth year, the Donald and Rob Sobey Scholarship has awarded more than $840,000 to recipients. Students interested in the scholarship can learn more online at www.queensu.ca/registrar/awards.
