Queen's Small Business Consulting wins big

October 24, 2003

Named "Small Business of the Year" by the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce

2003-10-24 - Queen's Small Business Consulting program has been named "Small Business of the Year" by the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce. The award was presented to program director and Queen's School of Business professor Dr. Perry Bamji and 14 fourth-year Commerce students at the Chamber's annual gala on October 24. This is the fourth year that the Queen's program has been nominated, but the first time it has won the prestigious award.

The award citation reads as follows:

"Established in 1973, Queen's Small Business Consulting (QSBC) is a unique, student-operated, revenue-generating Training and Consulting Business within Queen's School of Business. Senior year Commerce students (under the supervision of a faculty member as the director of the program) run this activity as a year-round, income generating Small Business. QSBC has deliberately kept their fees low so that even a small fledgling business in Kingston can benefit from this unique program. On several occasions, QSBC has also offered pro bono service to businesses and organizations that are unable to afford even their low-cost services. QSBC takes great pride in offering such services. This is one of the many ways of Queen’s University’s efforts in assisting small businesses, thus maintaining a healthy Town and Gown relationship.

QSBC’s success is due to an inexhaustible source of very talented, highly motivated, high-caliber students. What started as a training ground for students in 1973 is now a successful small business in its own right. It is the only successful business in Kingston where everyone (including the CEO) works part-time and, other than the CEO, the entire staff changes every three months! (A huge operational challenge in itself!)."
