1999-11-29 - Professor Frank Milne has been awarded the Queen’s School of Business 1999 Research Excellence Award. Dr. Milne holds a cross-appointment with the School of Business and the Department of Economics. The Research Excellence Award is presented annually by the School of Business.
Dr. Milne’s current areas of research include asset derivative pricing, the theory of the firm, non-standard preferences and the theory and public policy issues dealing with banking and financial intermediation. He is also interested in competition between for-profit and not-for-profit organizations and the structure of different organizations as responses to sophisticated market demanders and suppliers of services, and the reactions of competitors.
While he credits his breadth of experience to his 20 years on the board of his family’s business in Australia, he says his research is driven by the sheer thrill of discovery: "The most exciting part of research is the point where you can say "Now I see how it works!"
He has published prolifically, with papers in 20 journals including Econometrica, Journal of Economic Theory, Review of Financial Studies, Mathematical Finance, Management Science, and the Quarterly Journal of Economics. He is the author of Finance Theory and Asset Pricing (Oxford University Press, 1995), and has been a member of the editorial board of Mathematical Finance since 1991.
Teaching is an integral part of Dr. Milne’s academic life. He echoes the view of Richard Feynman, the famous physicist, who noted, "Research adds depth to my teaching, and teaching stimulates my research."
Dr. Milne received his Ph.D. from the Australian National University in 1975. He joined Queen’s in 1991, and was Graduate Chairman for the Economics Department from 1993 to 1995. He has also taught at the University of Rochester, Australian National University and the Australian Graduate School of Management. Visitorships have included the University of Chicago, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford University, London Business School, GSM at Melbourne University, Trieste University, Birmingham University, and the Institute of Advanced Studies in Vienna.
Dave Bussière is a Queen’s PhD student in Marketing and Economics.
