This report identifies and examines the necessary competencies required for a new Chartered Accountant (CA) to develop over a career, culminating in becoming a Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Secondarily, the report identifies the roles required for a Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The prior literature on CFO competencies is examined followed by developing and administering a survey to Ontario C‐suite executives.

The need to retain top talent has not been lost on the Kingston Economic Development Corporation (KEDCO). Recognizing that Queen’s University attracts some of the best and brightest minds from Canada and beyond, KEDCO commissioned a study to determine factors that affect the retention and attraction of knowledge workers in general, and specifically Queen’s graduates.

This report was written and compiled by the students in the Geography Department’s 337 class (Regional Development Planning and Policy) at Queen’s University held in the Winter Term of 2008 under the guidance of the instructor, Dr. Betsy Donald, and teaching assistants Jacinthe Beyea and Candice Christmas. The final report was presented to Dan Taylor, of the Prince Edward County Economic Development Office and Craig Desjardin, of the Prince Edward County, Lennox and Addington Community Future Development Corporation (PELA CFDC) on April 4, 2008.

This research describes connections within and beyond Prince Edward and Lennox and Addington (PELA) County that foster innovative and entrepreneurial excellence. The goal of the project is to reinforce and extend these connections with a view to enhancing regional economic development.

The growing number of retired community members and the burgeoning artistic and food communities build assets within the region and connect PELA to social and economic knowledge flows that enrich the community from the outside. Developing a better understanding of these dynamics allows the region to deepen and capitalize on existing strengths.

This work draws on interviews and discussions with multiple stakeholders in the Prince Edward County, Niagara Region and the province of Ontario wine industry. It also incorporates existing academic and grey literature as well as secondary statistical data. From this analysis, our research identifies challenges grape growers and winemakers face in their daily operations as well as the more general structural forces that constrain innovation.

The identification of aspects related to recruitment and retention of physicians is an important aspect of the administration of medical practices in Canada. There are many situations that result in the departure of medical practitioners and the resulting negative aspects of providing medical services with an undersupply of necessary medical practitioners. This investigation attempted to identify those aspects that motivate medical practitioners. These motivation aspects were investigated from the perspective of various audiences that provided further perspectives regarding this issue.
